Where Are Our Reading Habits Going?

The Reflection of Digitalization and Social Media on Young Minds

Today, access to information is easier than ever. But does this convenience reduce the time we spend with books? With the rise of digitalization and social media, young people’s reading habits are undergoing a clear transformation.

A significant number of young people spend long hours on social media while dedicating far less time to reading. Statements like “I can’t focus” or “I get bored after just a paragraph” reflect the personal impact of this shift.

On the other hand, trends like BookTok have reignited interest in books—but often only at a superficial level. Books are turning into decorative objects rather than works to be read; their covers are discussed more than their contents.

Of course, digital tools have made e-books and audiobooks more accessible. However, minds accustomed to fast and shallow content risk losing the ability to engage in deep reading.

Still, there is hope. Book clubs, online reading groups, and consciously shared content via social media show that many young people are still striving to keep their reading habits alive.

Literature is not just about words—it’s a world built on thought. And sometimes, all it takes to enter that world is to turn off the screen and turn the first page of a book.
